The Berlin Wall

Where???

The Berlin wall was a wall that split Germany into two parts. East and West.

Why???

The wall was built for one reason to stop people from escaping the foreign rule that their country was under.

When???

The wall was built after World War 2. Germany was defeated and all of the allied forces split up the country into four pats. USSR, America, Britain and France all got a part.

Who???

The wall was built by France, America, the USSR and Britain all helped each other to build the wall.

How???

The wall started as a fence of barbed wire and went through many stages. I ended up as a concrete curtain that parted the whole country. The wall was reinforced with lots of defensives such as, guard towers, pits to stop vehicles, and barbed wire to stop civilians. It was patrolled by lots of guards day and night.

Escaping The Wall

In its time only a handful of escapes ware made. The most popular way of escaping was tunnelling under it. The most successful tunnel was one that was started by some college students. It was situated in a graveyard. People would pretend to mourn at a grave and disappear into a hole beside it. The guards only found it when an unsuspecting mother fell into the hole leaving her baby in a pram on the surface. The guards found the abandoned baby beside the hole and shut down the tunnel. One escape that was made was when a group of people hijacked a truck and drove through the wall. The driver was shot but he kept on driving until he died.

The End of The Wall

People started tearing down the wall on the 9th November 1989 when free travel was allowed over the border. People brought hammers chisels and whatever garden tools they had to finally get rid of the wall that had split their country for so long. Today only small segments of the wall survives a reminder to all who don't want to remember.
