The Colloseum

When / Where: The Colloseum was built in Rome in the year 70-82. The architect is unknown

Why: It was designed to provide a venue for various forms of public entertainment such as Gladiator fights

Facts :It was designed to hold fifty thousand spectators and approximately eighty entrances so crowds could arrive and leave easily. It was constructed during the reign of Emperor Vespasiano. It took twelve years to build. It is a four-story structure and is 160ft high. Women and poor classes either stood or sat on wooden benches located on the top floor. The upper classes sat on seats of marble on the lower floors. The Colloseum was in regular use for four hundred years.
