Towards Positive Behaviour: Discipline Code of Scoil San Treasa.
Aims
We aim to ensure the safety and
well being of our pupils by:
- Establishing
a happy and secure environment for every pupil so that there exists an
efficient and stimulating learning environment.
- Developing
integrity and self-discipline in pupils based on consideration, respect and
tolerance for others.
Implementation
- Teachers
will show consistency and firmness, yet fairness and understanding in
relation to discipline.
- Greater
emphasis is placed on rewards than on sanctions so that pupils may acquire
the skills of discipline.
- Good
behaviour is encouraged and rewarded.
General Guidelines
for Good Behaviour

Politeness and good
manners are expected of each pupil.
- Pupils
should respect school property and the personal property of others and keep
the school environment
clean and litter free.
- Pupils
are encouraged to take pride in their appearance.
- Pupils
are expected to be in the right place at the right time.
- Pupils
are expected to adhere to school rules.
Rules: Around the School
Pupils must walk quietly in
corridors, going to and from yard, hall, church etc.
- Pupils
must follow the “three bell” instructions and may leave the yard only
with a teacher’s permission.
- Pupils
must play safely at all times, anti-social, dangerous or hurtful behaviour
is forbidden, (e.g. wrestling, headlocks, jockey backs, bullying,
intimidation, teasing, jeering, fighting, spitting, kicking, charging in
groups, bad language).
- Pupils
should walk to gates at going home time.
Rules: In the Classroom
Instruction
given by teacher must be obeyed (Do what teacher says)
- Pupils should work to the best of their
ability and present exercises neatly. ( work hard)
- Pupils must stay seated in their places
unless told otherwise. This is particularly important when teacher is called
from the room. ( Sit in your place).

Pupils should keep
unhelpful hand, feet, objects and comments to themselves. ( Keep quiet and
do not be giddy
Bullying
- Bullying
is defined as “repeated aggression, verbal, psychological or physical,
conducted by an individual or group against others”.
- The
most common forms of this type of behaviour are aggressive physical contact,
name-calling, intimidation, extortion, isolation and taunting.
- Bullying,
under, any guise, will not be tolerated and parents will be expected to
cooperate with the school at all times in this matter.
Travel to and from
School
- While
the school has no legal responsibility or control over pupils travelling to
or from school they are expected to behave in a manner in keeping with
school standards.
- They
will be regularly instructed and advised on Road Safety, Role of Traffic
Wardens, Use of Public Transport, Good Citizenship etc.
- The
staff of the school cannot accept responsibility for pupils before official
opening time of 8.40 a.m. at which time all pupils present should go to
their classrooms
- Parents
should observe the one-way system which operates in the car park in the
morning and afternoon and respect and obey the traffic warden.
- Pupils
with bicycles should not cycle until they are outside the school grounds.
Rewards
Greater emphasis is
placed on rewards than on sanctions.
- Class
student of the week award. Merit Points. Gold Cards.
- Homework
Passes.
- Pupil
of the year award.
- Stamps
and stickers on copies.
- Recognition
for good behaviour and kind deeds.
- Praise
and encouragement for improvement in behaviour and work.
Sanctions
Where sanctions are
deemed necessary, they will be imposed with three objectives in view:
- To
re-establish positive teaching which has been ignored.
- To
protect the common good (e.g. the safety, respect and education) of the
pupils as a whole.
- To
prevent recurrence of unacceptable behaviour.
The following forms of sanctions may
be imposed, taking due account of the gravity of the misbehaviour, and the age
of the child concerned.
1.
Reprimand in the appropriate forum, including advice on how to improve.
2.
Temporary separation from peers, friends and others.
3.
Loss of privileges.
4.
Debit points.
5.
Prescribing extra homework.
6.
Referral to Principal.
7.
Communication with parents.
8.
The ultimate sanction is suspension in accordance with Department of
Education and Science guidelines.
This
code has been drawn up after a process, which involved consultation with
teachers, parents, and pupils. It is endorsed by the Board of Management.
