KERMODE BEAR

Status: Endangered

  Description:

  1. 250 pounds
  2. Omnivores (which means that they eat meat and plants)
  3. White fur coats

Environment:
The Kermode bear enjoys streams and ponds. Once the snow comes the bear finds a cave or hollow tree trunk and goes to sleep for the winter. This is known as its den.

The Kermode Bear eats lots of food, such as, honey from wild bees nests, grasshoppers, grass and ants, roots, berries, nuts and fruits, mice and ground squirrels, fish and loads of salmon! As you can see the Kermode Bears eat LOADS of food!
They also drink huge amounts of water and during the autumn the Kermode Bear eats loads of food, preparing for hibernation.
Black Bears that have white coats are still called black bears, but since they are so different, they are called Kermode or Spirit Bears.
A full-grown Kermode Bear is about the size of two full-grown men and sometimes bigger! When it stands up the Kermode Bear can look a bit like a giant fat man in a bear costume!
As grown bears are so strong they are not afraid of many things, but if there’s danger then they climb a tree, and a Kermode Bear can climb a tree faster then it can run!

Threats:
The Kermode Bear was once hunted and poached. Now its natural habitat is being threatened by logging.
Although the Kermode bear will survive if a special sanctuary is established soon in British Columbia.
