THE KOALA

Status: Vulnerable

DESCRIPTION
The koala has soft wool-like fur that is grey above and white below. It resembles a bear but is actually a marsupial. They weigh about thirty pounds and on average grow to be two feet tall. Koalas consume to eucalyptus leaves and bark from twelve different eucalyptus tree species. They don’t move much from their tree so they don’t loose much energy.

  BEHAVIOR
Koalas sleep for up to sixteen hours a day and they rather prefer to be alone. They are arboreal, which means that they live in trees.

  ENVIROMENT
Koalas prefer to live in eucalyptus forests, coastal islands and low woodlands.

THREATS
The reason they became endangered is because the hunters were shooting them for their fur. Another reason is that they had breakdowns in their life cycles.

PROTECTION
Australian national laws protect koalas, but each individual state is responsible for the animal’s conservation.
