On the 19th of December Mr Cadigan’s 5th class of Scoil San Treasa Mt Merrion visited the famous Famine ship the Jeanie Johnston. We found it on the river Liffey. As we walked on to the ship we felt like we were taking a step into the past.
We were led down a narrow staircase to where the passengers used to sleep on the way to America and Canada. We saw how people suffered during the trip and how people survived. On the way we saw the doctor who saved many lives on the ship and it was because of him that no passenger ever lost their lives on the Jeanie Johnston.
Walking back up stairs we were given the chance to pull the sails of the ship up and down and also to turn the wheel. At the end of the trip we were amazed to learn how the ship was reconstructed to look like a replica of the original ship. We thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend it to anyone thinking of going.
