Status: Endangered
of becoming extinct!
Description: The
popular wood products made from trees found only in rainforests such as Mahogany
or Rosewood, have become a booming industry.
2.Originally
6million square miles of tropical rainforests existed worldwide. As a result of
deforestation only 2.6million square miles remain today.
3.These
dense, damp occur Latin and South America, Africa and in Southeast Asia”
Although they cover just seven percent of the earth surface, they can provide
habitat for between 50 and 90 percent of it’s plant and animal species.
4.The
tropical rainforests has three layers: The forest floor, the understory and the
canopy. The forest floor has poor soil. Mainly insects live on this layer,
although large mammals like gorillas and jaguars are also found there. Many
smaller animals, including anteaters, lemurs and tree kangaroos live in the
understory.
Importance: Deforestation
accounts for the loss of nearly 2/3 of Central America’s rainforest- almost
one million acres/year.
The
most species-rich plot of rainforests so far enumerated is in Peru:283 species
of trees 0.1 in diameter, or over 580 stems on one hectare. Here, every second
tree is a different species. While this is the most species-rich area, this kind
of growth Biodiversity is typical for most rainforests ecosystems.
Threats:
Every year a rainforest the size of England is cut down. (Shock shock horror)
