Scoil San Treasa Enrolment Policy

1.        Parents seeking to enrol their child(ren) in Scoil San Treasa are requested to return a completed Enrolment Application Form (available in the office) to the school by 30th  September of the year preceding year of entry.

2.       The names of children for whom Enrolment Application forms have been received will be placed on either of two waiting lists: 1. Community (Parish/Siblings) or 2. External.

3.       Equality of access is the key principle underpinning the enrolment policy of our school.  No child is refused admission for reasons of ethnicity, special educational needs, disability, language/accent, gender, traveller status, asylum-seeker/refugee status, religious/ political beliefs & values, family or social circumstances.

4.       However, the Board of Management of Scoil San Treasa has to respect the rights of the existing school community and in particular, the children already enrolled. The BOM also has to bear in mind the available space in classrooms, educational needs of children of a particular age, the presence in particular classes of pupils with special needs and Department of Education & Science guidelines regarding maximum class size. (Currently maximum average of 30 pupils per class).

5.       In the event of the number of children seeking enrolment in any given class/ standard exceeding the number of places available the following criteria will be used to prioritise children for enrolment:

A   Community (including children of current staff)

1)       Applicants from the previous year’s parish/siblings list who were not accommodated in that year or who transferred to the current parish/siblings list

2)      Applicants from the parish who have siblings currently enrolled in the school

3)      Applicants resident in the parish and applicants who have siblings currently enrolled in the school (applications must be received before previous 30th September)

B    External

4)      Applicants from outside the parish but resident in the traditional catchment area of the school, whose home address is closest to the school (as measured by a straight line on an OS map)

5)      Applicants from outside the catchment area who have difficulty in finding accommodation in their local national school list .

If the Community list is oversubscribed, priority will be given to the oldest.

Successful applicants will normally be notified before 1st January of the year of entry. Unsuccessful applicants from the community will be placed in category one for the following year. External applicants will only be notified if places become available after community applicants have been accommodated.

6.       Pupils newly resident in the parish are enrolled during the school year, subject to space being available in accordance with paragraph 4 above.

7.       Pupils wishing to transfer from other schools are enrolled subject to the Rules governing National Schools, as well as our own school’s enrolment policy and local agreements with other schools. There is an annual Induction Meeting for prospective parents (normally held in May) and parents can avail of opportunities to familiarise their children with the school environment.

9.       Children with special needs will be resourced in accordance with the level of resources provided by the Department of Education and Science to the Board of Management and, while every effort will be made to cater for these needs, parents of children who are dissatisfied with the level of educational provision in our school, are advised to consider a special school which is designed and resourced to specifically cater for the needs of children with special educational needs.

10.    Parents/guardians of children enrolled in our school are expected to support the curricular and administrative policies of the school. In particular, parents are to ensure that their children behave in accordance with the school’s Code of Behaviour as published in the school homework journal.
