Step 5.
Scoil San Treasa Integrated The Green School Ethos Into Curriculum Work
Art
The theme
Litter and Waste has been integrated into our art work with the
assistance of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown’s Artist in Residence.
Kiera and Aisling
describe the experience:
Scoil San Treasa’s 4th class have made recycled sculptures,
mostly out of things that would otherwise have
been thrown away. Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown’s Artist in Residence, Jackie Ball,
has helped them with their birds since the beginning. They visited the National
History Museum. They brought their sketch-pads and sketched various different
animals, but mainly birds
Back at school they got into their groups and sketched
an image of their soon-to-be creatures. Then they brought their creatures to
life over a period of weeks, using mostly recycled materials.
Some of the birds are the North Pacific Flame-Face and
Axen. They are made out of paper mache, large cardboard rolls, plaster of Paris,
lollipop sticks, loo rolls, tissue paper, beads, contact, etc.

SESE
The theme Litter
and Waste is covered by class teachers throughout the school. Pupils
from third through sixth class will be encouraged to research environmental
issues. Energy
Efficiency will
also be covered.
Sustainable Energy
Ireland provided facilitators to educate our younger pupils about energy
awareness.
Matthew and Eoin report:
Last
year, when we were in first class two people came in and told us about how to
save electricity and water .They brought a toy puppet called guzzler with
them. One of the ladies was from Germany and the other was from Ireland .They
brought a book with them called Guzzlers electricity book. In the book it told
us to never leave your light on at night, to close your fridge door, to turn
of the tap when washing your teeth and hands and to walk or cycle to school
instead of driving because of pollution .They also played a game with us where
you had to get a balloon a blow it up and tie it on a piece string let the air
out and see how far it goes.
Work in the school garden and in
the school grounds has been enjoyed by older and younger pupils.

Drama
A
theatre group provided by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council
staged a thought provoking production about littering in the school hall.
Discussions were held by classes afterwards and the awareness of the pupils was
raised.
See
also how we integrated Green Schools into Computer Class and Maths in the graphs
below.
Music
Two
songs, ‘Working on the Trash’ and ‘Recycling
in my Home’ have been adopted as our Green Anthems.
Maths
Collecting
and collating data helped integrate maths .
ICT
Using
Excel to make a spreadsheet in order to generate a graph was a new learning
experience for some of us. Our next step is to post this document to he school
web site………
Gaeilge
‘Coiste Glas’ is on the
tip of the tongue of every pupil in Scoil San Treasa!
